Description

This 18th century colonial painting represents the Carpenter’s Shop in Nazareth. Overseen by the Trinity and ten winged cherubs, the Holy Family tend to their chores. Young Jesus and Joseph pilot a two man cross cut saw through a blocky timber — a timber upon which young Jesus will presumably later be crucified. In the periphery, the room is buzzing with activity, angel apprentices chisel joinery and plane wood. In lower right, embroidering independently, Mary pulls her thread taught, alight upon a colonial hooked carpet. In lower left, a slave stokes the coals under a fire pit.
