Description
The 19th century retablo is attributed to one of the great retablo masters Concepcion Avila, better known as the ‘Bee Sting Lip’ painter. His unique painterly style, very much manifested in the retablo offered here, is unmistakable.
La Madre Santisma de la Luz or the Holy Mother of Light represents Mary rescuing a man from the jaws of a fiery dragon in lower left. In the right quadrant, Baby Jesus picks souls from a basket held by an angel.
An all around great folk retablo – layered with allegory and symbolism throughout.
