Description

Saint Agatha, patroness saint of breast cancer, earthquakes and natural disasters, is depicted in this very rare 18th century Spanish colonial oil on copper painting. According to popular legend, Agatha, having dedicated her life to Christianity, rejected the advances of Quintianus, who persecuted her for her Christian faith and ordered her breasts excised before sentencing her to be burned at the stake.
